Matching Festive Food & Wine, the Montpellier Lodge Way

At Montpellier Lodge, in the heart of the dining quarter in Cheltenham we are ready for the festive season with our menu and wine choices to match. Choosing the right wine to go with food can set many people in a panic, which is why it is even more of a treat to let us welcome you at Montpellier Lodge, take a seat and take time to consider the festive menu choice and be assured the glass that arrives will match perfectly – Christmas perfection!


So what do we recommend? Well it is Christmas time, so why not start the evening with a glass of fizz! Add some cassis and you have the wonderful festive colour and a Kir Royale! What a way to start the evening! What is particularly helpful is that here at Montpellier Lodge we offer a ‘fizz on tap’ selection…choose from a glass or a carafe and of course by the bottle available too. Note that the Smoked Salmon Mousse goes particularly well with a glass of Champagne or if you prefer a still wine then the wonderful Domaine Defaix Chablis 1er Cru Cote de Lechet will be a real treat and excellent match. It is a tradition that the Chardonnay grape, in both Champagne and Chablis accompany salmon perfectly! What is also known down the ages is that Chablis is the true perfection of the Chardonnay grape in a glass!

If you are looking for a winter warmer the Butternut Squash with Rocket, Coriander, Pickled Redcurrants and Orange Yogurt is Christmas colour on a plate! But what wine to choose? The Riesling wine offers full aromas and a wine that is slightly higher in acidity which cuts through the richer tastes of the Butternut Squash to bring the flavours together! Yippee!


Of course, we have the traditional Roast Turkey, Pigs in Blankets, Stuffing, Seasonal Vegetables & Red Wine Sauce….yum! But you need something that will go with this dish – a white meat – ……we recommend the Moon Struck Shiraz. This is a red wine, instead of the well-known white wine match with white meat. Yet, the Syrah or Shiraz grape allows wines fully-packed with blackberry fruits that accompany the Turkey perfectly, but it is the peppery notes that cement this great relationship. This is what we love about Shiraz!

If you are looking for a departure from the traditional turkey and perhaps something even more special, why not choose the Beef Bourguignon, Parsnip Creamed Potatoes, Button Mushrooms and Pancetta – it is divine – the only wine that you must choose here is the Chateau Mont Theron Chateau Neuf du Pape which is only by the bottle, but really worth the partnership!


It always pays at Montpellier Lodge to leave some room for dessert or cheese! It really finishes an evening of great food and allows you to linger a little longer on your evening out! With a choice of ports and dessert wines, just ask our Head of Front-of-House Sofie, for her recommendations! She will be able to advise on her favourites and choices!
